Cherry Jezebel
Background
“They’ve trampled on us queers before. But we always pick ourselves up by our jockstraps and keep going. And we are a city and a scene that look after its own!”
This show provides a rehearsed reading of a new play from Jonathan Larkin. And it covers love, filth and the drag that we all wear to belong. So, Cherry and Heidi are drag artists with many years of experience. Indeed, they’re old-school Queens feathering their nests with glitter, grit and guts. But Pearl arrives as the new kid on the block looking for a connection. However, what can you do when you wish to keep dancing despite the music stopping? And when the only person remaining under the glitter ball comes from another generation while not speaking your language?
Furthermore, this show is ultimately about queer family. Because it spotlights outsiders finding one another while seeking acceptance, understanding and safety in a mostly straight white world. But note that this show contains frequent very strong language, sexual scenes and drug-taking.
Creatives
Jonathan Larkin is the writer, with previous experiences including Paradise Bound and Hollyoaks, while James Baker is director.
Cast
A cast showcasing local talent is awaiting further announcements. But when the full list of performers is available, we will let you know!
Venue
Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre is instantly recognisable due to the light-up photographic panels outside the venue. But it’s also striking due to its plethora of topnotch plays, musicals, comedies and spoken word shows. Furthermore, its circular interior and its intimate capacity of 400 make for a pleasant and unique theatre experience. And it sits as part of Hope Street, right in the heart of Liverpool’s culturally-diverse student region. This also allows attendees to sample the city’s incredible nightlife in nearby bars after a show. So, the Everyman Theatre is a superb option if you wish to sample a Liverpool theatre show.
