We welcome the announcement of Chicago returning to Liverpool‘s Empire Theatre. The show comes to Liverpool from Monday February 7 to Saturday February 12 2022. Chicago
Background
“Murder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery and treachery. And all those things we hold are near and dear to our hearts.” As you can see, the opening words of Chicago have an impact, as does the whole of this globally successful production. Now, the show is set within the razzle-dazzle decadence of the roaring 1920s. And it covers the story of Roxie Hart. Now, Roxie is a housewife and a nightclub dancer. But she has a dark side, as she murders her on-the-side lover after his threats to leave her. However, desperate to avoid jail, she manages to trick the general public, the media and also Velma Kelly, her rival cellmate.
But how does she do this? Well, she hires the city’s craftiest criminal lawyer. And he changes her murderous crime into a continuous run of outlandish headlines. Some may say the modern tabloids follow the same strategy. But while Roxie’s scheme works initially, can it succeed in the long run for her to avoid heading to a Chicago prison? Don’t miss out and book now, because it would be criminal for you to not see how this pans out.
Creatives
The director of this show is Walter Bobbie, with choreography by Bob Fosse. In fact, Fosse joins Fred Ebb in writing the original book as the basis for this show. And the musical score as a whole comes from Fosse, Ebb and John Kander. Such songs include the likes of Cell Block Tango, Razzle Dazzle and All That Jazz.
Cast
Faye Brookes will play the crucial role of Roxie Hart, with the popular singer Sinitta acting as Matron “Mama” Morton. Additionally, Divina De Campo plays Mary Sunshine, with Djalenga Scott as Velma Kelly and Joel Montague as Amos Hart. Note that the producers could change the cast at any time, so the line-up is subject to change.
Venue
Liverpool’s Empire Theatre is a true mainstay of the city, ever since the venue’s initial opening in 1866. But a demolition of the original Empire would lead to the modern Empire opening in 1924. From there, the Empire would become a focal point for the UK’s top touring theatre shows. Indeed, so many iconic productions regularly come to Liverpool’s Empire Theatre. Furthermore, the list of performers to grace the Empire stage over the years reads like a who’s who. In addition, the Empire’s location is pivotal, with its positioning directly in front of Lime Street Station. The Empire has a total capacity of 2,381, with frequent sell-outs throughout the annual theatre calendar. Simply put, the Empire Theatre is amongst the UK’s top entertainment venues and an ideal backdrop for a classic night of theatre.
