Local lad and rising stand-up comedian Adam Rowe recently returned to his hometown to perform live over two nights at the Epstein Theatre, one of which was in front of the cameras for a brand new live recording.
His new Undeniable tour picks up where his previous Opinionated Hypocrite show left off; where OH covered his general personality, Undeniable focuses more on his adventures in the wacky world of live comedy so far. Rowe himself knows how one’s profile can suddenly become elevated, given that he recently won the Joke Of The Fringe award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival for the one-liner “Working at the Job Centre has to be a tense job, knowing that if you get fired, you still have to come in the next day.”
That sums up Rowe as a performer: garnering real laughs from simply stating fact, and being someone who can command one’s attention while delivering his amusingly frank viewpoints, as well as charting some of the unusual moments he has encountered as he has become more and more well-known. That his current tour was a sell-out indicates that the audience also likes what they are hearing from Adam, and such success will only grow as the years roll on for a lad who grew up in Dovecot and developed the sense of humour and free-speaking attitude that has made him a name to watch on the comedy circuit.
It’s also cool to see a clearly-gifted comedian at this stage of his career. His style and likeability put him on line with other stand-ups such as Russell Howard and Chris Ramsey, while having the local twang and Liverpudlian charm that allow him to stand out from other performers. He’s a relatively new face on the scene, but he’s already a must-see act, and over the next few years, we’re bound to see more and more of Adam as his profile inevitably increases.
In the meantime, though, opportunities to see him perform live in an intimate setting such as the Epstein are a treat, as was the show as a whole. If you missed these two nights, look out for when this particular show is released, but while you wait for Undeniable, it is also Undeniable that Rowe is a star in the making, as evidenced by a night of thoroughly enjoyable stand-up comedy.
