Everybody’s Talking About Jamie
Background
Funny, fabulous and feel-good, this show is a musical sensation for all the family and truly unmissable! Now, Jamie New is 16 years old and lives on a council estate in Sheffield. However, he doesn’t quite fit in and worries greatly about the future. And yet Jamie is going to be a sensation. With the support of his loving mother and his friends, he manages to overcome the prejudice. By doing so, Jamie defeats the bullies and steps away from the darkness into the spotlight. So, this musical will have everybody talking about Jamie for many years to come. And just remember: at age sixteen, you can be on the edge of possibility. And it’s time to make your dreams come true. Note that this show contains strong language and mild sexual references, so parental advisory is advisable.
Creatives
The director of this show is Jonathan Butterell, with Kate Prince handling choreography. Also, Tom MacRae provides the book and lyrics, with Dan Gillespie Sells handling music and Richard Weeden serving as musical director. Furthermore, there is Anna Fleischle covering the set/costume design and Lucy Carter covering lighting design. Finally, Paul Groothuis is managing sound design, and Luke Halls is the video designer. This UK and Ireland tour comes courtesy of Sheffield Theatres.
Cast
Layton Williams, fresh off his previous West End success as Jamie, once again takes up his famous role in this show. Sometimes, a performer plays a character so well that it becomes difficult to imagine anyone else in the role. And Layton as Jamie is an example of this. Which is why it’s such a treat for him to grace the Empire stage as Jamie. So, why not come along to see this for yourself?
Venue
Liverpool’s Empire Theatre is a true mainstay of the city, ever since the venue’s initial opening in 1866. But a demolition of the original Empire would lead to the modern Empire opening in 1924. From there, the Empire would become a focal point for the UK’s top touring theatre shows. Indeed, so many iconic productions regularly come to Liverpool’s Empire Theatre. Furthermore, the list of performers to grace the Empire stage over the years reads like a who’s who. In addition, the Empire’s location is pivotal, with its positioning directly in front of Lime Street Station. The Empire has a total capacity of 2,381, with frequent sell-outs throughout the annual theatre calendar. Simply put, the Empire Theatre is amongst the UK’s top entertainment venues and an ideal backdrop for a classic night of theatre.
Tour
The musical opens at The Lowry in Salford from September 1-12 2021. Then, it moves onto Birmingham, Leicester, Wolverhampton, Canterbury, Bristol, Newcastle, Leeds, Aberdeen and Cardiff. At that point, the show arrives at Liverpool’s Empire Theatre from November 23-27 2021. Subsequent locations include Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre, Woking’s New Victoria Theatre and Nottingham Theatre Royal. Finally, the tour concludes at Norwich Theatre Royal from March 1-5 2022, with further dates and locations awaiting confirmation.
