Analysis
This is thoroughly entertaining from the very beginning right through to the very end. Though it’s a Christmas season panto, the show itself covers all sorts of topics. Yes, we see Robin Hood, but we also see Woody from Toy Story, Bill and Ben (the Flowerpot Men) and even Elton John! Between popular culture references, catchy songs including Status Quo, Bryan Adams and Queen hits and dazzling costumes, there are lots to love. And that’s before I mention the incredible set that allows scenes to take place all over the venue. Along the way, there are comedy capers and jokes aplenty, as well as an intriguing take on a classic story. After all, who doesn’t want to see Robin Hood enter a cowboy’s saloon en route to taking down the evil Witch?
The cast also boasts incredible talent by simultaneously acting, singing, dancing and playing piano and guitar in rotation. Not to mention that in several cases, there could be as many as 8 different characters for one performer. In particular, Adam Keast and Matthew Quinn are superb, providing tons of laughs and the odd double entendre too. I must also mention the incredible singing of Stephanie Hockley, as well as the versatility of James Wolstenholme. Honestly, this is one of those shows where I could talk for ages and ages about the positives; it was so good. And of course, the audience loved it all, with the kids particularly revelling in the madness of it all. Indeed, this is unorthodox and unpredictable, yet also outrageous and absolutely hilarious
Summary
This should be a must-see show on your Christmas 2021 calendar (Covid restrictions permitting, of course). You will have an absolute ball, and the show itself is unique from any other pantos over the festive season. So, make plans to see the Everyman Theatre crew Rock ‘N’ Roll this year!
