I Like It – The Ultimate Tribute To Gerry Marsden
Background
When we think of the musical boom period of the 1960s, the city of Liverpool is central to that. However, there should be credit specifically for Gerry Marsden and his group Gerry & The Pacemakers. This show features the most famous hits from this group. Aside from the title track, there’s also Ferry Cross The Mersey and You’ll Never Walk Alone. Indeed, fans of Gerry Marsden will love to relive the glory days of his career through this entertaining show.
However, the show also covers vintage tunes from other icons from the 1960s. Look out for songs from The Beatles, The Merseybeats, Paul McCartney, The Hollies, The Searchers, The Swingin’ Blue Jeans and The Small Faces. There will be other great swingin’ sixties hits too! Gary Murphy and his band present the show. Furthermore, you will see Brian (Saxophone) Jones from the original Undertakers and The Rockin’ 60s.
Description
The Rockin’ 60s would grace the stage for the first portion of the evening with Larry Murphy as host. And they would cover such hits as Things We Said Today, Just One Look, 8 Days A Week and Don’t Throw Your Love Away. They would also sing I Think Of You, Return To Sender and Sea Cruise. Along the way, they would be joined by Brian “Saxophone” Jones. The Rockin’ 60s themselves were very good, and Brian Jones was superb on the sax. The Wanderer would conclude this section of the show in style.
Then, The Gary Murphy Band would grace the stage to handle the main section of the show. They would recall their experience of playing with Gerry Marsden during his last live performance in February 2020. This would then lead to them singing I Like It, How Do You Do It and Ferry Cross The Mersey. But they would get the night’s biggest reaction for You’ll Never Walk Alone. This iconic anthem would have everybody singing along, and it was as emotional as it was heartwarming.
Further Notes
They would then sing other songs from famous bands of the 1960s. Amongst those tunes were Bus Stop, Hippy Hippy Shake, Itchy Coo Park, Sorrow and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Along the way, we would see images on the giant projector screen of the original singers. There would then be a surprise with Asa Murphy entering the stage in Buddy Holly mode. He would cover That’ll Be The Day and True Love Waits. His cameo was fun and a nice preview of Buddy Holly Lives, which comes to the Epstein February 2022.
From there, the Gary Murphy Band would round off with several Paul McCartney songs as sung by Rob Stanley. The encore would see Brian Jones return to the stage for Tequila, ending the night on a high note. There were so many songs, and so many nostalgic memories, during this feel-good evening. It was great to hear a plethora of hits from one of music’s greatest decades. Plus, Gerry Marsden would be proud of the tribute that he would receive here. But it was also pleasing to see the musicians playing these tunes purely for their love of the art form.
Summary
If this show returns, I would definitely recommend that you try to see it. Though it’s a little on the long side, the running time flies by due to the entertainment value. And with so many great hits performed to such a high standard, what’s not to love? So, check out this show if you love the 1960s, because you’re in for a great night.
