This is our theatre review for Laughterhouse Comedy at Liverpool‘s Bombed Out Church. Now, this is the fourteenth show of Liverpool Theatre Festival 2021. So, let’s take a look at Laughterhouse Comedy!
Laughterhouse Comedy
Background
This is the longest-running comedy club active in Liverpool. So, they’re famous for delivering the absolute best in live stand-up comedy to UK audiences for 15 years. Furthermore, they realise what makes a truly great evening of stand-up comedy. Yet those behind Laughterhouse are themselves comedy fans, who are aware of the power and excitement of stand-up comedy. And following the huge success of the show to open Liverpool Theatre Festival 2020, it returns for this year’s festival. So, prepare for a night of hilarity from Scouse favourites top international comedy circuit acts!
Analysis
All of the performers on the stage would have the audience laughing hysterically for various reasons. So, Chris Cairns as MC was very funny in ad-libbing as he would learn about some of those in attendance. In particular, one woman from Birkenhead who now lives in Portugal would be the source of some great quips. Not to mention a near-the-knuckle observation on the men heading to the loos ahead of the interval. Now, the first main act was Mick Miller, a local legend who can turn any topic into a brilliant one-liner. And he would live up to his reputation with his commentary on holidays, hotel stays and lockdowns. And there would be moments when even he would struggle to keep a straight face while delivering his jokes.
Then, there was Gary Delaney, who would deliver one side-splitting joke after another. In his case, he would attempt to up the ante in terms of taste. And to that end, a clipboard would allow him to deliver even stronger jokes when the audience was ready for them. And finally, there was The Raymond And Mr Timpkins Revue of Britain’s Got Talent fame. This double act would offer something completely different, and something incredibly creative. Indeed, they would use props, signs, clothes and photographs to tie in with songs playing over the speakers. And there would be so many of them, yet every single one would make sense. And this incredibly funny and clever routine would draw the loudest reactions of the evening.
Summary
Each of the acts would be well worth paying the price of admission to see perform on their own. But having them all come together for this special performance was a real treat. And the Laughterhouse Comedy experience as a whole guarantees a great night out. So, if you get the opportunity, definitely sample Laughterhouse Comedy, as well as the acts (including Cairns) starring here.
