I have been fortunate enough to have seen the late, great George Michael live in concert. I also own a piece of valuable memorabilia which George himself donated to charity as I bid the highest price in auction; it is on display in pride of place. I therefore consider myself a bit of a fan. So, I wasn’t sure what to expect of this show. – but I was extremely impressed.
This was the first birthday of Fast Love – A Tribute To George Michael, with the first performance being held at Colchester. The time flew by, and before I knew it, the performance was over and we were singing Happy Birthday complete with a birthday cake on stage. I could have happily watched and listened for another couple of hours.
I do like it when tributes do not try to impersonate, but just perform. Joseph, as George, dazzled and his voice and vocals were superb. He emanates GM beautifully.
The array of songs that could have been selected for the show is vast. Those chosen were the cream of the crop. Amongst them were Faith, Freedom, Last Christmas, Club Tropicana, Careless Whisper, and of course Fast Love. The rendition of Jesus To A Child was dedicated to George and Aretha Franklyn gave me goosebumps – it was so moving.
The saxophonist (Ed Barker) executed his music pieces in the show perfectly. He played a blinder. Such a brilliant musician.
There was an eight-piece band/backing group, and four dancers who all did a great job supporting, but they could not distract us too far from the charisma of Joseph. He is a modest man, and shared the stage at one point to sing with the handsome backing singer, and with a mane of hair like his, he should be called Samson! He was a brilliant singer. and showman and his short solo part were a delight to witness.
The vibe in the auditorium was amazing. Everyone was having a fantastic night. We were singing along, getting involved, clapping, and dancing to the second song, which was I’m Your Man. There were big wide smiles and comments of approval from audience members during the interval and at showdown.
I love my job reviewing! It allows me to see sterling shows such as this. I would recommend this show to any George Michael fan.
