I love the Epstein Theatre, its tradition and style, the intimate feel there and the close proximity of the audience to the stage.
We returned for the latest version of Gary Murphy’s Guitar Legends show. The theme this time around was 100 years of guitar history. There were some familiar faces, and a couple of additional performers who played their part in providing an exciting evening of well-known songs from our best-loved guitar heroes.
There was definitely something for everyone and Mrs Butler’s eldest, Billy, returned to do the honours as host and narrator, introducing us to music through the ages and providing some historical background.
From Chet Atkins, The Shadows, The Beatles and Fleetwood Mac through to Gary Moore, Santana, a spot of duelling banjos and a fabulous guest performance by Elvis Clayton (who once again gave us a few of the King’s well-known numbers), the crowd were on their feet calling for more.
After a quick scoop in Brian’s Bar, it was back to our seats to see what treats the second half of the show held for us. Supporting team Jade Thunder and Rob Shirley provided superb vocals and guitar prowess, while the Fennah Bros on percussion and Adam Goldberg on drums kept the beat and pace going throughout.
The wonderful Gary Brown appeared in the second half with solid soaring, powerful vocals. My favourite song from him was Highway To Hell, and the rest of the audience thought it was quite good too! Then, we were lucky enough to get a Whole Lotta Rosie.
You could say they had it all! A brilliant night all-round.
