This is our review for Some Guys Have All The Luck – The Rod Stewart Story at Liverpool‘s Empire Theatre. Who doesn’t like a bit of Rod Stewart’s unique gravely voice nowadays?
Well, we didn’t see the man himself but, if I hadn’t been there and seen the show, and heard it with my own ears I would have been convinced it was the real Rod I was listening to and not this imposter. This imposter was seriously good though and performed perfectly using the same raspy voice as Rod’s to give us a fantastic celebration and reminder of the many years we have had the pleasure of hearing his music. The first solo hit single being Maggie May in 1971.

Paul Metcalf was our Sir Rod Stewart, and he sure did sound like Rod and did an excellent job of capturing Rod’s personality. Paul had the same moves and mannerisms we’ve come to associate with Rod. The wardrobe ensemble was spot on too, the clothes Paul wore were what you would have seen Rod wearing. There were a few costume changes during the performance, drainpipe trouser suits as well as the shoes of the day – this show had it all. Including a tartan suit. The production team have done their job well.
At the start of the show, the audience was captivated immediately the curtain went up with the opening song This Old Heart. We were treated to iconic songs such as: Wear it Well, Handbags & Gladrags (which is a favourite of mine) and many more memorable Rod songs.

Paul provided interesting and informative dialogue throughout the show and engaged the audience from the outset. He even made local reference to the European Cup Winners which was endearing. The montage of photographs displayed on the big screen added to the story and the atmosphere of the evening. I learned that Maggie May was originally a ‘b’ side – and what a mega-hit that turned out to be. The 5-piece live band have tremendous experience in supporting the show and they did a splendid job.
During the second half, the tempo lifted even further if that was possible. It was full of the songs that had the audience entranced and up and dancing. We heard You’re In My Heart and Rhythm Of My Heart. Plus Do Ya Think I’m Sexy (yes, definitely in that leopard-skin jacket!). The audience couldn’t stay in their seats.
Other Notes
The Liverpool Empire has a system called ordertorium whereby beverages and snacks can be purchased via an app/member of roaming staff and brought directly to your seat during the interval. It is a very efficient system they have in place and eases congestion at the bar/kiosk for the 20-minute interval (not 19, not 21, but 20 minutes – Paul’s words.)

Some Guys Have All The Luck – The Rod Stewart Story, named after the icon’s first album, was a fantastic show. Paul has been touring this show across the UK for a while. And he still has shows to do, including locally in St Helen’s and New Brighton. Paul did a sterling job paying homage to the man himself. Furthermore, it is well worth the ticket price to watch him and the fabulously talented live band perform. They all seem to really enjoy themselves too.
On leaving, many theatregoers discussed the brilliance of The Rod Stewart Story and how it was well worth seeing. I urge fans of Sir Rod Stewart to see this show. They will love it.
