Sh!t Theatre Drink Rum With Expats
Background
Celebrating their final year as Europeans, Island-monkeys Becca and Louise are celebrating their very last year as Europeans. But then they receive an invite for the European Capital Of Culture 2018 festivities in Malta. Now, this is significant, with them missing out on such celebrations last year in Hull. However, while they want to drink rum with Brits abroad, they quickly get much more than they would anticipate. Now, the lads on tour Sh!t Theatre wish to discuss home, your home and what we’re doing in your home. Not to mention what you could do in our home, and also whether the beers are sufficiently cheap. And from one small island in the sea to another, Sh!t Theatre finds mystery and murder amongst the continental battle. Or, rather, it’s another excuse for Sh!t Theatre to enjoy a few drinks on stage. Note that alcohol will be on offer to the audience during this show.
Analysis
This is a rollercoaster ride of a show from start to finish. There are many laughs along the way, especially when the central characters discuss Malta’s obsession with Oliver Reed. Indeed, not only do we learn where he had his last drink, but that The Pub reminisces about it to this day. The drunken antics are also humorous, as are the clever one-liners, the deadpan insults and their frank descriptions of both Malta and Hull. Furthermore, audience participation reaches a new level during this show. How so? Think of free cheese and beers being available beforehand, along with a free shot during the show. All amidst hits such as Fairground by Simply Red helping to create an upbeat and occasionally raucous atmosphere.
However, the show has a deeper meaning that it wishes to explore. As our heroes learn more about Malta, they learn about some of the political crises that are present in the country. Namely, the ongoing migrant issue, as well as a very controversial death of an online journalist. The tone shifts noticeably, but in such a way that we’re able to laugh again within moments. And yet at its most impactful, the show intentionally shocks and leaves attendees with something to think about. Thankfully, the situation is a little better in Malta in 2021, but the issues raised are still problematic. Therefore, this show does a great job of highlighting what is really happening beneath the drinking, tourism and Oliver Reed homages.
Summary
On the whole, this is an epic show that is well worth a watch for so many reasons. The performances are brilliant, the comedy material is frequently hilarious, and the free alcohol may please many attendees! But it’s also essential viewing for those wishing to learn about Maltese politics at an all-too-real level. Often gripping, never predictable and overall very memorable, this show easily gets two thumbs up from me.
