This is our theatre review for Sirens, Men And Crabs at Liverpool‘s Unity Theatre. So, let’s take a look at Sirens, Men And Crabs!
Sirens, Men And Crabs
Background
So, this is a world where the Sirens act as the unsung heroines. But Ulysses can never be the hero he wants to be. And worse still, Giant Crabs are taking over! But what will happen next? Find out by watching this show, a surreal mix of both clown and dark comedy that turns Ancient Greece upside down. Furthermore, this stage farce will guide you through a bizarre and political journey to leave you in stitches.
Analysis
As per the background information above, the best way to describe this show is “surreal”. Indeed, the show operates in a universe where the theatre template pushes itself in two directions. One is to the extreme as we delve deeper than ever into caricatures of the likes of Ulysses. But we also become part of the show itself due to the audience interaction that occasionally breaks the fourth wall. In some ways, it’s a total send-up of historic stage stories, but in other ways, it’s merely an over the-top reenactment. Cue the sumo crab costume, the mermaid’s tail, a puppet version of the actual stage and much more.
But this wouldn’t work unless the show were to remind us that it is a pastiche. And the production achieves this from start to finish with increasingly wacky and hilarious incidents. Watching it live, I would get vibes from The Play That Goes Wrong. And so it’s not a surprise that Mark Bell of TPTGW fame directs this very show. For we get small and subtle, yet often side-splitting, moments throughout that add to the craziness. Amongst these are questionable stage directions, delays for prop usage, and never-ending dialogue lines that would have the crowd howling. Add to that strong performances all-round and costumes that must be seen to be believed, and you have all the makings of a feel-good show that operates at a slow pace yet simultaneously never lets up in amusing attendees.
Summary
This show continues at the Unity Theatre until Saturday October 9, and I would definitely suggest that you check it out. It’s unlike anything you will see this year, and yet it’s a show I would happily watch again and again. Not to mention that it’s unpredictable, as well as being unafraid to shock. So, if you want something different that proves to be a real treat, this would be a great show for you.
