This is our review of Six at Liverpool‘s Playhouse Theatre. So, let’s take a look at Six!
Description Of Six
From the West End onto Broadway amidst Buckingham Palace, the international smash-hit musical Six is on tour! This is a multi-award-winning show with a superb soundtrack that has climbed the charts everywhere! And this sell-out Tudor take-off has a very strong and powerful message while pushing boundaries and redefining genres. We meet everybody from Tudor Queens to Pop Princesses. So, the six wives of Henry VIII take to the mic to tell their tales. Furthermore, they remix 500 years of historical heartbreak into a 75-minute celebration of modern-day girl power. Yes, these Queens might have green sleeves, but their lipstick remains a rebellious red. Think you know the rhyme? Think again!
Analysis Of Six
This show was a smash hit at the Empire Theatre back in April. However, the more intimate surroundings of the Playhouse Theatre made this particular production even more enjoyable. Though the performers often refer to the “show”, to me, this is more of an experience. It’s a chance to dive straight into history while also enjoying amazing music, unpredictable comedy, and striking outfits. All six ladies are strong in their roles, ranging from eyebrow-raising one-liners to heart-wrenching soliloquies. There’s a little bit of everything from all six.
So, we meet Catherine Of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne Of Cleves, Katherine Howard, and Catherine Parr. Each recaps their tales of woe, and at times, their recollections of redemption. In between are some stunning songs that ensure the show has an excellent and catchy soundtrack. Smartly, each section is carefully written so that no “chapter” is weaker than another. And everyone in the audience will consider who their favourite is, which forms the basis for the show’s main story. Furthermore, the finale wraps things up very neatly and allows us all to leave with smiles.
Summary Of Six
I give this show a very high recommendation. There’s so much to enjoy about it, and at 80 minutes, the show flies by. But during that relatively brief amount of time, you will appreciate everything from the music to the history. And you also get to see performances of the absolute highest calibre. So, make sure to see Six during its Christmas 2022 run in Liverpool!
