Background
They say that “All Things Must Pass”. However, George Harrison’s name is going to live on forever. Now, this show comes from the team behind Something About Simon – The Paul Simon Story. And this all-new show explains what happens to you after being in the world’s greatest band. So, it features Daniel Taylor, who details the story behind one of the music industry’s most understated icons. And we hear songs like Something, My Sweet Lord and Handle With Care. But there’s also amazing solo material and music from the supergroup that was The Travelling Wilburys. And of course there’s plenty of great Beatles tracks as well. Furthermore, there’s heartbreak, hedonism, songwriting and success. And more than anything, this show emphasises a life that would be anything but quiet.
Analysis
Daniel Taylor does a great job telling us the story of George Harrison in his post-Beatles life. Though his admiration for Harrison is clear, Taylor shows professionalism in recapping George’s experiences slowly and calmly. Very much in line with the manner of the legend himself, actually. So, we hear about how George would embark on his initial solo ventures in music. Along the way, we learn of his marriages, his legal battles and his work in film production. Furthermore, we not only hear about the music that he would produce, but the personal meaning behind particular songs and albums.
On that note, we’re privy to plenty of Harrison’s most famous tunes from his post-Beatles days. My Sweet Lord would garner the biggest reaction from those in attendance. But the likes of Something and All Those Years Ago would also resonate, as would Give Me Love and Bangla Desh. And the visual effects that would light up the Bombed Out Church would enhance the atmosphere throughout. Especially when, with a lack of video footage, the focal point throughout is Taylor and his backing musicians. (All of whom would do their job very well, I might add.) I would personally learn a lot about Harrison in his post-Beatles life by watching this show. Furthermore, it reminds us that, as great as The Beatles were, for each member, their careers would continue. And in each case, their solo careers would flourish, with Harrison’s successes on display here.
Summary
It’s fitting that the Liverpool Theatre Festival would end with a tasteful tribute to one of the city’s favourite sons. And the show is highly entertaining, informative and enjoyable from beginning to end. Make sure to watch this show if you can, especially if you’re a lifelong fan of George Harrison.
