This is our review of The King And I at Liverpool’s Empire Theatre!
Synopsis Of The King And I
The orchestra provided a musical introduction by playing the tunes that would embody this show. And it’s a classic story of the King of Siam, who needs an English teacher for his (many) children. Miss Anna arrives by boat to take the job. When asked if she was afraid, she simply sings Whistle A Happy Tune.
Anna finds the King very unwilling to stick to the premise of her own house. But while teaching, the King (a very stubborn man) insists that she stays in the palace. Anna meets all the children and the King’s (again, many) wives. Soon thereafter, love is in the air, albeit secretly (hence the song Hello Young Lovers). As the story progresses, the teacher becomes popular, as evidenced by the song Getting To Know You. The King finds her Western ways puzzling, yet she does help to change his behaviours. But can this last, and does this tale have a positive outcome?
Analysis Of The King And I
This is a great production with outstanding singers and strong acting. Not least from Helen George, star of Call The Midwife who appears in this show. Furthermore, we are treated to wonderful traditional costumes and dance routines. It’s a very professional production, and no wonder; it comes straight from Broadway to the West End and onto Liverpool.
For that reason, this was very popular, with sell-out crowds for every single performance. And everybody got their money’s worth with a show of the highest calibre. I will say that the running time was a little lengthy at just shy of three hours. But the experience is worth it when the standard is so strong.
Summary Of The King And I
This theatre show is bound to return to Liverpool in the future. And when it does, I definitely recommend watching it when you can. Just make sure to get your tickets as early as possible to avoid any disappointment!
