This is our theatre review of The Lion King at Manchester‘s Palace Theatre. So, let’s take a look at The Lion King!
Synopsis Of The Lion King
So, this is the stage version of the classic 1994 Disney movie. We meet Mufasa, King of the animal tribe, and his son Simba. Although Simba is the future heir to the throne, his maturity is still to develop. To that degree, he puts himself in harm’s way alongside his friend Nala. Mufasa’s frustration at Simba’s childish behaviour equals only his love for the Prince.
In the meantime, however, Mufasa’s brother and Simba’s uncle, Scar, develops a wicked plan to become King himself. With the help of his callous hyena friends, Scar triggers a series of events that achieves his goal. This is at the expense of Mufasa’s life and Simba’s future. As a result, Simba leaves the jungle, seemingly never to return. However, he meets Pumbaa and Timon, who help him to start a new life. But with the jungle suffering under Scar’s rule, can Simba stay away, or could he return to reclaim the crown?
Analysis Of The Lion King
This whole show is a gem, and it’s a true experience to be a part of. I must start with the production because it’s incredible to witness. The way in which each animal comes to life ranges from amusing to clever to breathtaking. In particular, some larger creatures wow the audience, especially younger attendees, upon their arrival. Then, we have the lighting and background settings, which recreate the jungle in a brilliant manner. At times, it’s easy to lose yourself and fully immerse in the spectacle of the show.
Then, we have some of the show’s timeless songs, such as Circle Of Life and Hakuna Matata. Not only are the tunes catchy and easy to learn, but the vocal performances by the cast are impeccable. Speaking of the cast, the performances as a whole are topnotch. Everybody fits into their role with aplomb, making for a believable retelling of this story that at times elicits raw emotion. Not forgetting the comedic moments, which can get the entire auditorium giggling in unison on many occasions.
Summary Of The Lion King
There are many great theatre shows. But the list of shows that you absolutely have to see is very small. This Disney show, though, makes that list, because it’s a production of the absolute highest standard. Everything about the show is absolutely fantastic, and no matter your age, the production values alone will mesmerise you. The show runs at Manchester’s Palace Theatre until March, but I urge you to see it sooner rather than later. A truly magnificent show that you will never forget.
