The Mourning Bride
The Mourning Bride is coming to Liverpool’s Hope Street Theatre from Monday March 9-Tuesday March 10.
MT Productions will present a full length play that is a contemporary take on Christopher Marlowe’s 1593 tragic masterpiece, Edward II; it is reimagined for 21st century Merseyside.
Shortly after his ascension to the throne, King Edward II ensures his lover Gaveston returns from exile, lavishing him with titles and riches. Their all-consuming lust alienates Queen Isabella, makes enemies of his nobles, eclipses the law, and threatens to destroy the nation.
MT Productions takes the classic Edward II by Christopher Marlowe – one of the earliest English history plays – and re-conceptualises this tale of desire, law, politics and property in a 21st Century Merseyside world of high-street business corporate takeovers where all the power and control is in the hands of women.
Directed by the founder of Decima Theatre, Zara Marie Brown, this production will feature an exceptional cast including Kel Nkondock, Shannon Power, Charlotte Cumming, Neve McLaughlin, and Caitlin Bradley.
The Mourning Bride is a full length play from MT Productions, the company that brought the award winning Let Them Eat Cake, also The Thin Red Line, Daddy’s Boy, and Enigma Stigma to Liverpool theatres including the Unity, Everyman and Hope Street Theatre.
The Mourning Bride is a story of love, power, jealousy and revenge. A woman scored is to be avoided, but what happens when the whole cast is made up of women?
“Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned.” William Congreve, 1697
The Mourning Bride crew includes an adaptation by Marjorie H Morgan; Zara Marie Brown as director and Charlie Collinson as assistant director. The cast features Kel Nkondock; Shannon Power; Charlotte Cumming; Neve McLaughlin and Caitlin Bradley.
