This is our review of The Scouse Jack & The Beanstalk at Liverpool‘s Royal Court Theatre. So, let’s take a look at The Scouse Jack & The Beanstalk!
Description Of The Scouse Jack & The Beanstalk
The Royal Court Christmas show is back once again, and it’s deffo not for the kids! If you want stupid jokes, they’re here! And if you want amazing live music, that’s here as well! As for rude language, drinks at the table, and a great meal beforehand? That’s here also! But like we said, leave the kids at home because this deffo isn’t suitable for under-16’s!
Now to the story: well, Jack’s mum is proper fumin’. That little divvy has only gone and took taken their only cow, Daisy, to St John’s. And instead of selling him for money, he brought back a tub of Heinz Baked Beans. And then he lashed them into the back garden, causing a massive weed to grow up. It rose through her bespoke Italian paving stones and it put a big hole right in her butterfly bush. Mind you, Jack’s problems are only just starting. Because after legging it up the new tree, he found something even more terrifying: a fearsome giant! And the giant (E’on) is after Jack coz he was trying to pinch his bird. So, what the fee fi fo fum is going on???
Analysis Of The Scouse Jack & The Beanstalk
The Royal Court’s annual Scouse panto is always a festive treat, and this was no exception. Key to the enjoyment of the show is the humour, because there are local references and naughty jokes aplenty. Not to mention all of the familiar faces to Royal Court regulars. Keddy Sutton is brilliant as the Fairy, while Andrew Schofield typically raises the roof as the evil Commissioner. There are also strong performances from Lindzi Germain, Michael Fletcher, Hayley Sheen, Liam Tobin, and Jake Abraham in their various roles. Oh, and some of the sight gags have to be seen to be believed!
Elsewhere, writer Kevin Fearon and director Stephen Fletcher provide an experience unlike any other panto this winter. There are scenes that are very creative and totally unique to this production. (I won’t provide spoilers as the surprises are well worth checking out!) Also, there is a typically festive feel due to the Xmas songs between each Act, not to mention the decorations around the auditorium. And something which struck me when watching the show: the entire team (particularly the cast) is likable and relatable. Their genuine nature and good intentions elevate the show because you can genuinely relate to and care for the characters. Not to mention that it’s obvious how much fun the cast is having, especially when things unintentionally go slightly awry.
Summary Of The Scouse Jack & The Beanstalk
With the Christmas festivities well underway, now is a great time to check out this show. It makes a great Xmas work party, a family treat (only for adults!), or simply a night of continuous laughs. Between the big musical numbers, the hilarious dancing, the clever local references, and the relentless humour, this show has everything. So, we would deffo recommend checking out this panto over the coming weeks, because it’s a proper belter!
