Another famous show is getting the treatment this spring as Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre presents My Fairfield Lady.
Written by Kevin Fearon (The Scouse Nativity, The Scouse Cinderella), this is a non-musical take on Pygmalion, the story used as the basis for the musical My Fair Lady. The well-loved tale of a gentleman’s attempt to pass off an ordinary woman in high society has become a real favourite.
My Fairfield Lady flips the plot on its head, as a strong-willed scouse mum is looking for a good, old fashioned Liverpool girl to take her son in hand. The only decent candidate is a Cheshire gal, who sounds more at home in a vineyard than a Wine Lodge.
The cast includes Helen Carter, Jessica Dyas, Julie Glover and Danny O’Brien. The show will be directed by Chris Mellor and designed by Olivia Du Monceau.
Mary is in The Royal and on her way out. She’s not too bothered though, she’s had a good innings. She came from nothing and ended up running her husband’s company – one of the biggest scaffolders in the North West. There’s a tidy amount to leave behind and just her only child, Higson, to leave it to; a nice lad but a bit of a biff. He needs a good woman to take him in hand. A good scouse woman.
Lizzie runs the posh florist in Liverpool One. She’s from old money in Cheshire, but now has no money in Fairfield; she’s got airs and graces that she can’t afford. She and Higson hit it off, but she needs to pass herself off as a Scouser to land the jackpot. She’s going to need some lessons, and is lucky that her mate Sandra is there to lend a hand.
Come and join us to see if Lizzie can blag her way in Liverpool society, or if she gets sussed as a wool and told to do one.
Kevin Fearon commented: “This is a story that I’ve always loved and we know that it is going to be a lot of fun. We all know that there is no tougher task in the world than trying to fool a scouse mum!”
