From a witty narrative and modern political jokes, to a unique set layout, The Little Matchgirl didn’t disappoint.
Now, I am not a huge fan of musicals, but this had the mix just right. Journeying with the little heroine on a frosty night gives a heart-warming tale that makes you appreciate the simplicity of life.
Niall Ashdown conducts the performance in the style of an orchestrator. He carefully links up each performance with humour, great presence and a taste for what the audience wants. Adding some political references to keep the adults amused, he takes a shining role as the Emperor. With a healthy dose of banter, his character shows exactly why we have all that we truly need in our family and loved ones. During the play, just as the child-friendly jokes are reaching their summit, the Emperor reveals a little more than we thought. A perfectly executed shock had the audience invigorated for the rest of the show.
The cast worked well together. They had range in their talents and appearance. All cast members could be easily remembered as they all had their part to play. Thumbelina is a slow starter, and with the use of the puppets it takes some concentration to stay focused. Mole is a standout character in this narrative. Guy Hughes takes on the role with confidence and delivers a distasteful Mole. His nasty controlling character evokes empathy from the audience. The sadness in each of the tales keeps the audience connected throughout.
Overall, Emma Rice’s directorial role has blended a show of many tales that will leave you satisfied. The show has been carefully crafted to make us think of those not in our privileged position. I think this is a nice antidote to the usual Christmas or family tales. It gives us more to think about beyond the humour. Each character stands out with their own talents, but keep yourself primed for the Emperors arrival. The show instantly ignites during this tale.
Overall Rating: 7.5/10 – Good
