Our latest theatre review is for Treasure Island at St. Helens Theatre Royal in St. Helens. So, this was the first theatre show back at St. Helens Theatre Royal. So, let’s take a look at Treasure Island!
Treasure Island
Synopsis
ARRGH! It’s all aboard as we take an adventure to Treasure Island! So there’s going to be swashbuckling pirates along with magical mermaids and a ton of laughs and hijinks. However, there won’t be any quarantine rules for this tropical trip! Furthermore, all of the colourful characters will be on hand to come along for the ride. Plus, with the summer still in full swing, everyone is up for a trip along the sea. So, come and join us in this brand new ship-shape pantomime for all of the family!
Analysis
It was a joy to once again be at St. Helens Theatre Royal. Indeed, it’s too long since we could enjoy a show at this venue. And a pantomime is the perfect way to return, because of the feel-good nature and the slapstick humour. Helping matters was the cast being fully capable of entertaining attendees of all ages in their roles. So, these include Phil Dixon, Todd Carty’s understudy, putting in a very strong performance as Long John Silver. Not to mention Reece Sibbald showing his versatility as the writer and director while also playing Silly Billy. Furthermore, Cal Halbert as Captain Cal Smollett and Pippa Smith as Polly Perkins would impress. As would Emma Deborah Ward as the Magical Mermaid and Jordan Michael Todd as Jim Hawkins. Also, Jim and Polly especially would demonstrate excellent singing voices.
Elsewhere, we would see beautiful costumes for the senior dancers, especially during their scene as sailors. This being a panto, the jokes would come thick and fast throughout the show, with the script appealing to everybody. Furthermore, the show would intersperse with very clever sketches, in particular the board games and Elvis sketches. The kids would love the show, with the cast responding accordingly with humour and enthusiasm. Going back to the dancers, they would show great talent, thus representing Team Oasis brilliantly. But I must particularly endorse Tazmin Browne and Laila Dula. Oh, and some of the very young dancers would add cuteness to proceedings too!
Summary
Treasure Island at St. Helens Theatre Royal would live up to its name: this was a real treasure. It was a highly enjoyable and fun evening with great energy from start to finish. We’re glad that St. Helens Theatre Royal is back, and Treasure Island would mark its return splendidly.
