This is our review of White Christmas – The Musical at Liverpool‘s Empire Theatre. So, let’s take a look at White Christmas – The Musical!
Synopsis Of White Christmas – The Musical
The falling snow adorns the opening on Christmas Eve 1944, and music cheers up the gloomy soldiers. But the general wants a stop to it, saying “let’s see what happens come 1954.” Well, we go to 1954. And the two singers that night – Bob Wallace (Jay McGuinness) and Phil Davis (Dan Burton) – are now massive stars. They invite the Haynes sisters, Betty (Jessica Daley) and Judy (Monique Young), to join them as they arrive at a hotel in Vermont.
Upon arriving, Wallace and Davis realise that the hotel is in trouble. So, they devise a scheme to put on a show that will raise money to save the venue. Along the way, each of the sisters falls in love with the superstars. But there is another issue: Wallace and Davis invited their old army pals to come along. Yet the General (Michael Starke) stands in their way. Without the troops, and with other elements suffering, can this show succeed? Or can it triumph against the odds?
Analysis Of White Christmas – The Musical
A red carpet and photographers greeted us, creating a special atmosphere right from the get-go! Everything felt really festive, as one would expect given the title of the show. But it really did feel like Christmas at the Empire, and the show was just what the audience wanted. The story was easy to follow, and we get a few twists and turns to keep us guessing.
Meanwhile, there are plenty of memorable music numbers, ranging from Sisters to Suzie. Not forgetting, of course, White Christmas, which was the only possible choice to close out proceedings. This ensured a true feel-good finale, and the atmosphere was pleasant and good-natured from start to finish. It was particularly suitable for older audiences due to the time period under scrutiny here. Elsewhere, the dancing was very good, the scenery was outstanding and highly effective, and the costumes were stunning.
